A ROTO-FUSE installed in the drive line provides a torsionally rigid connection up to a precise pre-set torque, at which point it instantly disengages and rotates freely. To re-engage, simply stop the drive and either advance the output or reverse the input one revolution or less.

The unique, two-stage, uni-directional design incorporates multiple ball detenting for high torque capacity, and single key drive for single-position, remote re-set, in a simple, practical efficient package.

A torque overload causes the spring-loaded balls to retract into the rotor, allowing the rotor to rotate relative to the housing. With about 15° relative rotation, the single drive key "escapes" into the recess in the housing outer wall, allowing the hub to rotate freely without "ratcheting" the multiple balls.

The exceptionally free-running release permits high speed and/or long term release running with no wear on the torque control elements. The multiple balls result in low ball loading which permits the use of sharp-detents which (1) eliminates premature torsional deflection up to the release point, and (2) insures extremely fast torque "drop-off" when the release point is reached, and (3) provides precise, repeatable, long-lived release torque settings.

Re-engagement is accomplished by reversing the relative rotation for one revolution or less, either by reversing the input (driver), or advancing the output (driven), and does not require access to the clutch. When engaged, the clutch provides solid drive in the reversed direction of rotation.

Re-engages at same angular relationship between input and output automatically.

Clutch is uni-directional - provides torque control in one direction and solid drive in the opposite direction. However, the symmetrical design permits any unit to be used for right-hand or left-hand rotation.

Switch-plate attachment is provided to actuate a stationary switch, if desired, to shut off motor or actuate warning light or horn, etc. The plate design permits either input or output clutch member to be used as driver or driven with positive switch actuation.

Wide range of torque settings in each size simply by adding, subtracting, or changing springs.
